Hill House Logo/Identity

This University of Texas at Austin campus ministry was inspired to re-brand itself after changing its name from The Probe Center to Hill House following a move into a historic home built in the 19th century by a prominent Austin family named Hill. The ministry's aim as a Christian study center is to help college students interpret and apply Christian values in a time of significant social change. The idea was to identify Hill House as a place of engagement about how Christianity functions in the world and how students can grow and defend their faith.

In the initial graphic design phase, our work yielded logos featuring many of the expected Christian symbols, including the cross and chalice. These ideas were rejected early on as too traditional, even when applied well. The identity concept of a pathway began to emerge. Hill House provides a metaphorical path to applied modern Christian values. That definition began an exploration of visual ideas combining "house" and "path.” The chosen design is one that indicates both in a very simple yet distinct and recognizable way. Rather than a visually accurate drawing of a house, the Monopoly-style shape allows for a description of "house" at a higher level — not a specific house, but house/home as a metaphor for belonging. Since many students are away from home at U.T. Austin, graphic design provides an instant connection and aura of welcome, even before students know what Hill House does. The simplified pathway that can be interpreted as a way both into and out of the house serves to support the ministry's goals. The traditional serif typography is applied to "ground" the concept, while the subtly larger "H" in "House" supports the pinnacle of the roof line. The roof also acts as a highly simplified arrow helping to indicate "The Way.” Sharp lines and minimized detail allow this logo to function well in every application.
